A 46" Samsung TV For My Parents
My parents have been very generous with my sister and me, so we decided to get them a one-time, giant Christmas gift: a 46" Samsung LCD television. Originally, we'd settled on the 40" screen because we were trying to keep the expenditure to around $1,000. However, when I found the LN46A550 for $1,275 before Thanksgiving, we discussed "supersizing" the television.
Why?
You see, my parents tend to underbuy, and, left to their own devices, bought a 32" last year for the den. They realize (now that I showed them the ratio settings) that 32 inches is too small. In a few years they would probably upgrade to a 40" widescreen, but really, that is the MINIMUM size they need in the den. A 46" screen would be more comfortable, but they're too timid to buy one themselves. If my sister and I don't buy the 46" for them, they'll never have it.
Also, I predicted the 46" would come close to our price range during the Thanksgiving weekend. I found anecdotal evidence online that Frys.com offered the television in October for $1,188 with free shipping. They had since raised the price, but I hoped they would lower it again over the holiday. If we could get the 46" tv for $1,150, just $150 more than we had planned for the 40", we decided it would be worth it.
All last week, PriceGrabber showed the lowest price to be $1,212. Late on Sunday, I checked Fry's, and sure enough! There it was for $1,099, no tax, free shipping! It sold out fast, but not before I nabbed one.
Update: They love it! It arrived early; and, like a couple of kids, they got excited, and broke into it before Christmas.
